Ugly Butterfly 2.0 is Chef Adam Handling MBE’s luxury restaurant and bar, situated at the iconic five-star hotel, The Headland in Newquay, above the shores of Fistral Beach.
About the restaurant
Ugly Butterfly 2.0 offers a flexible four-course menu, a relaxed terrace menu with indulgent comfort food, and an afternoon tea menu, celebrating local Cornish produce.
Inside the restaurant, visual nods to Cornwall’s breathtaking natural landscape are woven throughout the space. Soft pink and pale green tones echo the shifting light from day to night, creating a backdrop for striking floral arrangements, featuring dried flowers and branches and dainty individual table lamps glow, to add a soft warmth in the evening.
A mural created by local artist Olly Howe covers the restaurant’s exterior, capturing the sapphire, ruby and gold colours of the Ugly Butterfly logo. Aged-bronze butterfly installations appear to flutter gracefully around the artwork.
On the menu
The restaurant reflects Chef Adam Handling MBE’s bold vision for sustainable British luxury - with the same ethos and spirit as the original Ugly Butterfly, yet evolved in every way. It is all about how a guest would like to eat - offering a flexible ‘4x4’ menu, enabling guests to build their own journey through the South West’s larder, with four dishes in each section - plus the option to start with Porthilly oysters.
The team uses the highest quality local produce for their dishes and drinks, delivered fresh from local suppliers that ensures the trip from field to fork and sea to plate is as short as possible, meaning guests are served with dishes and drinks of unrivalled quality. Highlights on the restaurant’s 4x4 menu include ‘Bluefin tuna, preserved truffles, elderflower’, Adam’s signature ‘lobster, wagyu’ using sweeter, smaller St. Ives lobsters, ‘Lamb, tandoori cauliflower, nasturtium’, and freshly baked Cornish apple tarts, served tableside.
No visit to an Adam Handling restaurant is complete without trying his 'snacks', which are available as part of the afternoon tea menu, and as a snack selection in the bar. The snacks utilise the offcuts and trimmings from the 4x4 menu, reflecting the best in local seasonal produce, turning the 'ugly' waste elements into something beautiful.
The restaurant and bar also offers an outstanding wine list, with over 500 bins, making it one of the most extensive in Cornwall.
Ugly Butterfly 2.0 is open seven days a week during the summer season and five days a week for the rest of the year.
